Under One Roof collects three of our short pieces together, One or the Other, One Small Step and One Dark Night. It takes place in a house that has been divided up into flats and follows the the tenants at key moments in their lives.
One or the Other: Tom and Jerry share a ground floor flat with the delightful Bella, but they both hope to share more. After over- indulging on the ‘Bake Off’ , they hit upon a plan to prove who has the best ingredients. Inspired by ‘Tom and Jerry’, three-part harmony and TV cookery programmes, Filament brought this cheeky piece to Tête à Tête: the Opera festival in the summer of 2013. Cast: Gavin James, DJ Walde and Osnat Schmool
‘I’ve never seen Harrison Birtwistle’s opera Punch and Judy, but I don’t imagine it’s this much fun.’ One Stop Arts
One Small Step: Upstairs are a couple in the initial years of parenthood. We join them as they experience their child’s first faltering steps. An a cappella duet, intercut with a percussive score, charts the highs and lows of watching a child learn to walk. Cast: Adebayo Bolaji, Osnat Schmool. Watch a short film of a promenade performance of this piece by clicking on this link
One Dark Night: On the top floor, a woman arrives back at her flat after another dreary day at work. She is depressed, weary and alone. One Dark Night follows her episodic journey through the evening and into the early hours, mixing memories from her past, banalities of her present and dreams of the future. From sock sorting to soul searching, the protagonist and her chorus bring to life the all too familiar long dark night of the soul.
‘One Dark Night happens to me all the time, spot on’ , ‘Really clever, loved the soundscapes and how there was always something different and interesting to watch’ , ‘Really easy to relate to with a funny edge, Fridge part was my fave!’ ‘Catchy, entertaining, pitched at good level’ Audience Feedback from Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival
